Mandolins

Acoustic Music Works generally keeps about ninety mandolins in stock. That's a lot of mandolins. A customer walked in the store and remarked "wow, you have more mandolins than any store in town...wait, you have more mandolins than all the other stores in town combined....Whoah...and then some!"

We've got some student grade instruments from Kentucky, Breedlove, Gold Tone and Trinity College, and VERY high quality intermediate mandolins from Breedlove, Kentucky, Eastman, and Weber. What we *do* though, is feature professional grade mandolins from Collings, Summit, Phoenix, Weber, National Reso-Phonic and Pomeroy and we often have fine used Stiver, Brentrup, and vintage Gibson mandolins.

Here is a sampling. We buy, sell, trade, and invite consignments. We are always interested in considering vintage mandolins as well as used Gibson, Collings, Red Diamond, Stiver, and some Stelling mandolins. We ship worldwide. All e-mails receive a prompt and courteous reply.

Collings mandolins, like their guitars, set the modern "production" shop standard for acoustic instruments. They just do. Handcrafted in Austin, Texas, these instruments are a player's dream and we know they are the vintage collectibles of the future. Collings mandolins are VERY difficult to keep in stock. As one of Collings' top dealers, we get between three and four mandolins per month and that is never enough so we keep a waiting list. Plan ahead, feel free to inquire, and invest with confidence. If you don't see what you are looking for, please call or e-mail. We love to talk about Collings mandolins and we invite special orders. If you have a used Collings to trade or consign, we go the extra mile. Try us first!
Collings MF5 Custom
Quilted maple
Engelmann top
Just Arrived (NEW) From a long awaited and highly anticpated batch of crazy good quilted maple. This mandolin is an MF-5 custom. We chose Engelmann spruce for the top as we have a soft spot in our hearts for the Earl of Engelmann. As we assume this mandolin will go to someone with very refined taste, we added a pickguard and the wider (1 and 3/16") nut width. We also added Waverly tuners because, as Alex told us, this mandolin deserves them. List

Collings MF5-O Custom
Quilted maple
Engelmann top
Just arrived (NEW) There is good and then there is crazy good. This mandolin is crazy good and woodya look at that wood? We asked Collings to find us the best quilted maple on the planet. They found it, then they built us a mandolin with it. We chose Engelmann spruce for the top as we think it often works best with the oval hole and is a particularly good match for this maple. The instrument is powerful, like a real F4 oughta be - with presence and low end out the wazoo. Seriously: It sounds even better than it looks. Take this to the office with you. We guarantee that no work will get done. Collings thought enough of it to gat out the lights, hire the studio photographers and feature it on their website HERE List

Collings MF5 mandolin
Sunburst
Just arrived (USED) Exc. - A very early Collings MF5. Great woods, with very tight grain highly flamed "HARD" maple back. One of the earliest of the Collings F5s, and it has matured into a loud, powerful, and dark sounding mandolin. Has been played a lot and the first seven frets were well worn. It has just returned from Lou Stiver's mandolin shoip where it received seven new frets and a setup by the very talented Mr. Stiver. The condition is excellent "minus" based on some light discoloration on the tailpiece and some brush scratches on the treble side top. No serious dings. No worries. Looking for an *exceptionally* loud Bluegrass mandolin that can be heard over a banjo?. This mandolin has been owned by played by a very fine player who has made the move up to a Collings MF5 Deluxe Varnish. So welcome to the best of both worlds: He's done all the heavy lifting and opened this one up for you - and Lou has re-fretted it and made it play like new. What ask could you ask for? Oh yes - it comes with a Calton case! Note: The Calton case has been sold separately. The mandolin now has a lower price and comes with a standard Collings case. ON CONSIGNMENT NO LONGER AVAILABLE

We are very pleased to offer Phoenix mandolins by Rolfe Gerhardt of Thomaston, Maine. Phoenix is a small company building approximately forty mandolins per year and dedicated to crafting instruments which are visually and tonally stunning. His dual point Jazz, NeoClassical, Deluxe, and Bluegrass are our favorites. They are light and balanced with lots of technical innovation and great responiveness and bark. We're proud to represent Rolfe and offer these superbly crafted professional grade instruments.

Rolfe, builder of the legendary Unicorn mandolins in the 70's, has spent the last thirty years applying new musical instrument technologies to the 8-string American mandolin. Using the finest tonewoods and forty years of experience, he crafts the musicians' dream mandolins: a unique extra-light string model for classical, folk, jazz, and Celtic music; a model specifically designed for the jazz enthusiast with dual pickups; a highly-refined model for all styles of playing with medium strings and featuring the famous Unicorn vine inlay; a top-of-the-line model for medium strings with its abalone purfling and flying phoenix headstock; and there are three Bluegrass models for medium-heavy strings including the incomparable Master Model. Pay attention to these mandolins.
Phoenix Jazz (NEW) Jazz model - dual pickup electric acoustic model. We mean it when we ccall this the "ulitimate" electric-acoustic mandolin. The McIntyre Feather pickup, tried and proven on other Phoenix models, provides the natural wood sound amplification that is one aspect of mandolin sound. A suspended magnetic pickup custom crafted by Kent Armstrong provides the electronic element that is an essential part of jazz. A 22-fret fingerboard is used to position the pickup where Kent Armstrong recommends. Voiced for flat-wound strings 011"/.016"/.022"/.034", delivered with Thomastik stark (heavy). $4,800 And Wow, What a great mandolin. Lively, woody, and punchy as can be acoustically...but just wait til we plug it in! Our price - $ 4,320 $4,320
Phoenix Standard (NEW) Wow, nothing "standard" about these! Rolfe has changed the designation from "NeoBluegrass Model" (which was a bit of a mouthful) to "Standard" with McIntyre Feather pickup ($200) and optional finger rest ($100) installed. Everywhere you look on these instruments, you see innovative and interesting details from carbon graphite neck reinforcement to "Timeless Timber" maple for the base of the bridge to engraved tailpiece cover to installed strap button to really great fit and finish and Eastman fiberglass suspension case. A remarkable instrument, well conceived and brilliantly executed. List price: $3,900 $3,495
Phoenix NeoClassical (NEW) We are HUGE fans of this model - as we are of all Phoenix mandolins, but we have to confess a special affection for this model. For our mandolin orchestra types and those of Celtic influence.....the charming and visceral NeoClassical Phoenix... This model is designed for light gauge strings (comes with Thomastik 154-K) and responds to a very light touch. The "NeoClassical" moniker may be slightly restrictive, as this mandolin covers so many bases, but is so light and exhuberantly musical that the well earned NeoClassical name has stuck. Don't let that stop you from getting one to play Irish, old-time, Jazz (or anything other than Bluegrass I would say) Priced very reasonably at $3,600 All Phoenix mandolins include a very nice (Eastman) fiberglass case. # 491 List price: $3,600 $3,250
We'll added Weber mandolins to our lineup in 2008. The Weber mandolin line is the most diverse in the industry and we will be working with them to build some custom instruments that meet our high expectations. Their vintage models, their willingness to welcome custom orders, and their use of cedar as a topwood caught our interest. We look forward to a great relationship with Bruce Weber and his band of merry men. We speak mandolin here at Acoustic Music Works and we're proud to add the Weber line to our shop. Stay tuned!

Kentucky KM-1000 (SOLD) (NEW) Our hats are off to the folks at Saga. This new model, the Kentucky KM-1000, is clearly a step up from other intermediate level "import" mandolins. For a time in the late 70's and early 80's the Japanese-built Kentucky mandolins (KM1000, KM1500, KM-Dawg) were highly prized, and they remain so today. Well I am here to tell you that they are back. With Red spruce top, figured Northern Michigan maple back, and nitrocellulose lacquer finish sunburst, these handcrafted Chinese models have put Kentucky back in the game. The workmanship rivals or exceeds the very best import mandolins (Eastman) but the voicing, particularly for bluegrass, clearly favors the KM-1000 which has much better bark and chop than other imports. The KM-1000 includes a decent hardshell case, high quality (Gotoh) tuners, and the first instrument even arrived with a very decent shop setup, even included a leather silencer inserted in the silver-plated tailpiece. We'd still prefer to see a longer warranty than one year, and we will keep suggesting they extend that but for now - this is a mighty impressive accomplishment indeed for this price range. These will be made in very limited quantities. We're proud to offer this exceptional quality VERY attractively priced mandolin. SOLD
Kentucky KM-1000 (SOLD) (NEW) Our second KM-1000. Man, I hope the wood supply holds up for the folks at Saga. The workmanship rivals or exceeds the very best import mandolins (Eastman) but the wood on this thing looks like wood we've seen only on very old Gibsons. We all know its hard (and expensive) to maintain this level of material in a mandolin - especially at this price! So our advice is get one while you can, as we feel something has to give. This mandolin should be selling for $800 more than it does. The KM-1000 with its Adirondack spruce top has much better bark and chop than other imports. This one has particulalry strong trebles and will be a legitimate bluegrass machine after it has been played a while. This mandolin has a particularly nice maple back and includes a decent hardshell case, high quality (Gotoh) tuners. Again, this is a mighty impressive accomplishment indeed for this price range. These will be made in very limited quantities and supply is very limited. We are pleased to offer them. SOLD (RT) SOLD
Kentucky KM-1000 (SOLD) (NEW) Our third KM-1000. Just arrived. Nice open sound right out of the box. Even with light factory strings, it has a throaty growl and a full sound that does not belong on a mandolin at this price. Can't wait to hear it with a set of J-75s. SOLD (KH) Another one due next week - SOLD
Kentucky KM-1000 (SOLD) (NEW) Our fourth KM-1000. Again...Nice fat trebles, strong throaty midrgange, loud. Another nice one. Nice Adirondack top on this one - we continue to say there is no mandolin on the market even close to this one for this price. This compares favorably with some $2,500 and $2,900 mandolins. SOLD
Kentucky KM-1000 (SOLD) (NEW) Our fifth. Another Kentucky KM-1000 - so far, very consistent as this one is as good as the previous batch. This one has *great* flame maple back and fine tone. PLays great. A *VERY* nice mandolin - just a KILLER mandolin at this price. (SOLD) (BK) SOLD
Kentucky KM-1000 (SOLD) (NEW) Our seventh. Another Kentucky KM-1000 - so far, so good and this one might be the best one yet. The pictures speak for themselves and so does this instrument. Exceptional Adirondack spruce top on this one as well as highly figured maple on the back and strong tone right out of the box. Factory setup is pretty good, but we go over them to bring out the best. A little heavier string on the "A" is a good idea. Plays great. A *VERY* nice mandolin - just a KILLER mandolin at this price. Oct 1 - Kentucky has raised the list price on the KM-1000 to $1995 - the case is $150 SOLD

Previously Owned STIVER Mandolins
We've created a special section for pre-owned Stiver mandolins because we are lucky enough to get a fair number of them, and Lou Stiver has been kind enough to create a link from his website to ours. We are not a dealer for new Stivers, that is an exclusive privilege that Elderly Instruments has enjoyed for over twenty years. Lou does our repair work for us, and we think the world of his mandolins. Our mandolin teacher, Charley Rappaport, owns and plays two Stiver mandolins. Feel free to inquire, and invest with confidence. If you don't see what you are looking for, please call or e-mail. We love to talk about Stiver mandolins and we often have one available. If you have a used Collings to trade or consign, we go the extra mile. Try us first!

Stiver F model (SOLD) (USED) We love Stiver mandolins and we get to see a fair number of them. These are very special to us. Lou Stiver is our friend and he does our mandolin repair work for us (great work indeed!) This is a very good example of his work, a 1978 F model, back when Lou was based in Akron, OH. This mandolin is in excellent condition, and appears to have been played very little (original frets still in great shape) but has that classic Stiver bark and volume. Ready to go blue-grassing. SOLD
Stiver A model (SOLD) (USED) We love Stiver mandolins and we get to see a fair number of them. These are very special to us. Lou Stiver is our friend and he does our mandolin repair work for us (great work indeed!) This is a very good example of his work, a 1993 A model with a scooped and radiused fretboard, a strap button, and a pro pickguard installed. The mandolin has the *classic* Stiver sound, with lots of bark, volume, and plenty of punch. This mandolin has been played a LOT in its fifteen years and has lots of scratches and some finish checking, and the finish has worn through behind the nut. Lots of peg-winder scratches on the headstock. All the flaws are cosmetic only - the instrument is extremely solid and has been recently re-fretted and set up by Lou Stiver. The sound is WIDE open. It's ready for its second fifteen years. SOLD

Stiver F model (SOLD) (USED) We love these and we get to see a fair number of them. These are very special to us. Lou Stiver is our pal and he does a lot of mandolin repair work for us (great work indeed!) Well here is a MAGNIFICENT 1989 Stiver F model that is among the best sounding Stiver F mandolins to roll through here...and we've seen our share. This one is near perfect, purchased from the sons of the original owner, and has the original receipt in the case. It is all original and in nearly new condition but has been played and well cared for by someone who knew how to do both of those things well. It has the original rectangular case (also in perfect condition) and a few cool old accessories in the case. It is one I'd surely keep for myself if I didn't have this pesky predisposition to put the very best stuff "out there" where it belongs. Woof woof! Want a GREAT sounding Stiver mandolin? You've found it. Sorry - didn't last a day. SOLD SOLD

Vern Bryant F-5 (SOLD) (USED) VG condition 1993 Bryant F-5. Vern Bryant mandolins of Springfiled, VA (now made under the maker's own name with "Bryant" on the headstock) are in the hands of some top players. This mandolin has been consigned to us by a pro player. While this mandolin is rather rustic in appearance next to some of the boutique brands we carry, old Vern here stands toe to toe with a lot of high end mandolins when it comes to sound. If you are in town, stop by and try it. You'll be very surprised! SOLD
Collings MF5 Custom
Varnish
(SOLD) (NEW) Because of our high ranking among Collings dealers, we were given our choice of the Summer NAMM Show display models. We didn't want to be greedy but we did take thirteen pieces and one of them is this positively *spectacular* F-5 mandolin that was built specifically for the trade show. It's just drop dead fantastic. The fat lady has sung. Elvis has left the building. It's a light amber color with tortoise binding and nickel Waverlies with black knobs and ebony pickguard with ever-so-subtle tortoise binding there as well. It is clearly a singularly gorgeous mandolin but the *sound* is that hauntingly rare woody and throaty combination that we hear every so often in a new mandolin. Charley Rappaport, our mandolin specialist, calls this one a "home run." Charley has been on the cover of Mandolin Magazine. This mandolin belongs there as well. The woods are superb - just plain master grade: magnificent one piece maple back busting with soft flame and quilt and a high grade set of clear straight grain Adirondack spruce. Varnish finish all over, of course. We've never seen or heard a nicer mandolin. This bird sings! It is a *steal* at this price. SOLD (JG) SOLD
Collings MF5
Deluxe V
Custom - Englemann
(SOLD)(NEW) Having sold a boatload of Collings mandolins now, we're pretty sure we know what we're doing. Well...here's what we're doing. A custom (and we mean custom) top of the line varnish finish MF5 Deluxe V. Well over a year in the making, varnish finish, special "stiff" Englemann spruce top, Gilchrist style brown-ish tobacco burst, one piece (been saving this for a worthy project) marbelized HARD Sugar maple back (from a VERY old tree) nickel Waverly tuners with pearl knobs, (NOTE: spec changed to GOLD hardware) engraved decorative headstock inlay and purfling, engraved tailpiece, and striped ebony pickguard. A tone bucket of well considered enthusiasm. A finger piano with a that undeniably cool scroll for the strap-thingy. Price includes deluxe Calton case. We've been told by several very reputable pickers who have visited the Collings factory and seen it in final stages that this mandolin is AMAZING! - And we have given first right of refusal to someone of impeccable taste and incredible patience who deserves it. (SOLD) (JV) Fresh pics - even better than anticipated - just an amazing sounding mandolin! We'll be doing more Englemanns - keep watching. SOLD
Collings MF5
Deluxe V
(SOLD) (NEW)Through sleuth, cunning, and schmoozing we were privileged to nab the 2006 Summer NAMM display model (premium select woods, loaded for bear, showstopping, pick of the litter) of the Bill Collings' top of the line varnish finish MF5 Deluxe V. It goes back to the Collings plant for cleanup and fresh strings, then comes here, then ships to your house :-) All the best - Varnish finish, GOLD Waverly tuners with PEARL knobs, engraved decorative headstock inlay and purfling, engraved GOLD tailpiece, interesting striped ebony pickguard. Pure mando mania. HUGE sound!! We expect it to sell quickly. Collings has really raised the bar with these varnish F5 deluxe mandolins. $ 12,900 The new standard. SOLD (LG) SOLD
Collings MF5
Deluxe V
(SOLD) Collings' new varnish finish F5. Bill Collings turns it up a notch by adding (finally!) a varnish finish, exotic headstock inlay, decorative purfling, silver Waverly tuners with pearl knobs, engraved tailpiece, bound ebony pickguard (yes!) and a bucket of dry tone. We saw our first one at the Nashville NAMM show in 2004 and it was magnificent. The guys in the Marshall amp booth had to ask us to play the mandolin more softly - it was drowning out the amps. Beautiful aged look to the binding and tone that will keep you up nights. Expensive and worth it. ETA: mid February. It is pre-sold. Reservations on future orders accepted. One piece back, Cremona brown sunburst (custom) It has a dry fat bark that only a handful of "new" mandos have had in my experience. It has that rattling throaty sizzle, a dark warmth, popping trebles, and a sternum pounding thump that I have only heard on a few... What can I say? The finest item in the store. No less than magnificent. Off the charts visually and tonally. It's been over-nighted to its anxious owner, and while we hated to see it go, it went to a very good home. Before packing it (very carefully, I might add) I was able to pass it through the capable hands of Charley Rappaport, Alan Epstein, and Bob Artis, all of whom had nothing but high praise for the instrument. Charley in particular (who gets more mileage of out those skinny frets up top than any man I know) commented that the mandolin had *perfect* intonation - dead on and fat singing treble tones. One happy Gypsy! When Alan played it, I commented, "this one sounds like it has a 'tone gard' built right in" - More like it on order - and worth the wait! SOLD

Original ETA was "early June 2006" - Arriving early by special arrangement. Collings is treating us well. The fix is in!! Enough about that. What a beast!! Wow - a drop dead gorgeous "vintage looking" dark tobacco sunburst F style mandolin with the modern roar and punch and perfect intonation that we have come to expect from Collings. Collings MF5
Deluxe V
(SOLD) Bill Collings' varnish finish MF5 Deluxe V. Varnish finish, silver Waverly tuners with ivoroid knbs, decorative headstock inlay and purfling, engraved tailpiece. Special Order: Custom Gilchrist-style light brown cremona sunburst on Red spruce top with GREAT one piece (soft) Red big leaf maple back, and buckets of warm dry tone. "Red on Red" ETA late April, 2005. Customer Special Order - It is pre-sold. Reservations on future orders accepted. This one was ordered without a pickguard, but 'ol Bill went ahead and installed threaded brass inserts in the neck and provided a pickguard "on the side" (just in case). Look at the carbon fiber reinforcement on the back of the handcrafted pickguard. Check out the attachment scheme - that boy's a genius. This is another positively incredible mandolin. I tried to catch it from a few good angles indoors and out - the outdoor shots show the brown finish, the indoor flash shots show it as redder than it is. Beautiful woods, impeccable Collings workmanship, dark, loud, dry, throaty, crunchy, sternum rattling tone. Just magnificent. Nothing else to say on this one....except SOLD. Wanna reserve the next one? SOLD
Collings MF5-V Deluxe

Collings MF5
Deluxe V
Custom
(SOLD) (NEW) Another magnificent Bill Collings custom MF5 deluxe V - this one a special order for a good picker from Santee, SC. Oh, just another well considered world class varnish mandolin. Nothing too far afield from the classic F-5 design on this one - the nickel-silver Waverlies and engraved tailpiece and standard sunburst over a Red spruce top with a one-of-a-kind ONE PIECE back of very hard sugar maple and some special custom sinister "skull" etching to the pearl inlay on the headstock. Just a killer F5 as a reward for a life well lived. With silver Calton case. The notes really *pop* off this hard maple back, and the mandolin has incredible throaty midrange and piano-like trebles. Kicking butt and taking names... (SP) SOLD
Collings MF5-V

Hand selected for us by someone with very good hands (and ears) at the Collings factory - one of the best sounding F-5 mandolins out of the box we have ever heard. Some mandolins develop a loose throaty gurgle after they open up, but very few have that quality on day one. If you are looking for instant gratification in a state of the art varnish F5 mandolin, I humbly submit to you that this should be your instrument. List price: $10,450 - our price $9,405. SOLD SOLD

Call it your retirement fund. Absolutlely marvelous grain in the red spruce top. Great flame, nice and light. OK folks - straight scoop. We get a lot of great instruments coming through here. We get some awfully fine mandolins. 30 seconds with my trusty Dawg pick tells me THIS is the one. Visually, mighty purty. Tonally - off the charts. Everything that our ears know to listen for in a good mandolin is here in abundance in this throaty little box. The perfect blend of percussive chop with singing musicality. The high notes sound like a piano. Charley Rappaport, who is fond of saying things like "this will be a great mandolin someday" says of this one "this is a great mandolin *period*". Collings MF (SOLD) (USED) These don't come up very often, if ever! (well...the second time for us!) - a USED Collings MF. The purchaser bought this as his *first* mandolin (quite an ambitious "first" mando, but who are we to say?) and he and his very understanding wife think it's time for him to upgrade to the next level. This fine F model was traded back on a deluxe Collings varnish A model (we kept him in the family). The MF retails for $4,300 - We sell them new for $3875. This one has been enjoyed for a little over a year, and treated VERY well. The original owner had a Cumberland Acoustic tortoise (F9 style) pickguard installed ($100) The MF is a great sounding intermediate priced pro quality mandolin and and this is excellent + condition, nicely broken in, with original case. It is priced to sell quickly Pickguard included. SOLD Thanks Adam. SOLD
Collings MT2 custom amber - Englemann (SOLD) (NEW) The second of the two custom amber MT2 mandos will be an MT2 amber/tortoise custom with ENGLEMANN spruce top, nickel hardware, black tuner knobs, pickguard (YES, pickguard on a lacquer mandolin) and *tortoise* bindings. We love the look and we are seeing a trend develop toward custom Englemann topped premium mandolins for certain discerning players. Hairy armed bluegrassers prefer Red spruce but many fine players (Thile and O'Brien, to name two) find Englemann is the stuff of immediate gratification. Designed to resemble this one. Just arrived and just magnificent, with that more delicate woody sound that Englemann delivers out of the box. Lighter toned and less aggressive, has that nice loose throaty gurgly thing going on, without a hint of stiffness. Nice looking striped ebony headstock veneer and the black knobbed tuners look hot! SOLD (EL) SOLD
Collings MT2 -O mandolin
Blonde
Engelmann spruce
(SOLD) Wow! That's all we can say. I take that back. This thing is the thrilla in Vanilla, the Blonde Bomb, and the Earl of Engelmann. Wow! There, we said it again. This is a Blondie, made with some very special Dagwood. I am telling you, oval hole mandolins and Engelmann spruce - perfect together. The warmest oval Collings we've heard yet. SOLD (NC) SOLD
Collings MT-O mandolin
honey amber
(SOLD) (NEW) Our first MT-Oval and it is superb! Perfectly straight Engelmann spruce on highly flamed maple - all dressed up in that delicious honey amber satin finish. This mandolin sounds AMAZING! Loud, warm, full - holy smokes they've gone and done it again. This is one of the *prototypes* of the MT-oval and you'll notice it has a tortoise-bound soundhole, but it has no rosette. The production models will have a rosette around the soundhole. We think this one looks cool, kind of Mediterranean, without the rosette. With unusually high grade woods and tone like this...should last about a day I'd guess. - SOLD(JD) SOLD
Collings MT2-O
oval hole mandolin
Blackface
(SOLD) (NEW)The new MT-O oval hole is not quite as loud, doesn't cut like an F hole, but has roundness, sweetness and sustain that is characteristic of the oval hole design. This one will be a blackface, of course. How cool is that? Like butter, a whole stick of butter. Like love on a cracker. SOLD (MY) SOLD
Nugget-Collings Tim O'Brien model (SOLD) (NEW) a collaborative effort between Collings Mandolins and Mike Kemnitzer of Nugget Mandolins and the artist: the Tim O'Brien A Model Mandolin. Materials used for the soundboards, backs and bridges will be selected from Kemnitzer's private collection of hand-picked tonewood. The carve, brace and tap tune will take place at Nugget Mandolins and shipped to Austin, Texas where they will be transformed into completed instruments at the Collings workshop. Ordered almost two years ago, production of these models is very limited. Tim O'Brien is one of our favorite performers. From Hot Rize to Tim and Molly, to the O'Boys, to his solo show and his collaborations with Darrel Scott and others, Tim just does it for us. We're thrilled to have one of the Tim O'Brien models coming our way. The whole thing reminds us of winter evenings at the Elizabeth Moose Lodge with Tim and Rod McNeil. Reminds us exactly of why we are in this wonderful business. It's not wood, glue, and tuning machines. It's people. (RJ) Sorry, PRE-SOLD. SOLD

One piece back
(SOLD) The ultimate A model mandolin That's right, you heard us. We think we've hit it right on the head this time. Out of the park, around the moon, and bound for the hall of fame. Botticelli's Birdseye Blonde provides the starting point for this mandolin. Ordered twelve months ago...Just arrived! Check out the pic of Johnny Staats sampling this ultimate MT2-V custom: A varnish blonde, with a very hard ONE PIECE (!!) highly figured birdseye maple back, and the less stiff stuff of immediate gratification, the elixir of "woof", the Earl of Enough, *Englemann* (yes, Englemann) spruce top, GOLD Waverly tuners with pearl knobs. Pure mandolin bliss. Hoo Boy....Hello My name is Earl. Sorry - (SOLD) (KF) SOLD
Collings MT2-V custom
Wide neck (Varnish)
(SOLD) (NEW) Another custom MT2-V with *exceptionally* fine woods and the ever so slightly wider (1 and 5/32") extremely comfortable nut width. Just an amazing set of Red spruce for the top, and insane flamed maple on the back. What's not to like? Just a GREAT mandolin. Just arrived...and just fantastic !! $4,850 SOLD (MB) SOLD

Collings MT2-O
oval hole mandolin
(SOLD) (NEW) The new Collings oval hole mandolin. Just announced at Summer NAMM. The MT2-O features oval hole with rosette, 1 and 3/16" nut width, and X-bracing. Otherwise, the features will adhere to the MT2 standard (sunburst, double bound maple back and sides, Adirondack spruce top, cast tailpiece.) The list price will be $3,800. Our first one features a beautiful one-piece back. To no one's surprise, Bill Collings took on another project, another category, and he got it exactly right. The new MT-O oval hole is not quite as loud, doesn't cut like an F hole, but has roundness, sweetness and sustain that is characteristic of the oval hole design. He nailed it. SOLD - (GB) SOLD

This one has the slightly wider (1 and 3/16") nut width. I can sprinkle adjectives all day about this, but it wouldn't matter. It's actually simple - another magnificent sounding varnish mandolin - from the brain and hands of Bill Collings - just *killer*. SOLD(SM) SOLD

Collings MT2Vsb USED This is a first for us - a USED Collings MT-2 VARNISH sunburst mandolin. Sold new here last year for $4,230. Played well for one year - nicely broken in (a few dings) and very open sounding. Strap button installed and recent (pro)setup by Bob Jones in Brooklyn, NY. Great buy on a serious mandolin. SOLD (MY) SOLD
Collings MT2-O
oval hole mandolin
Black on black
(NEW) Alex called to tell us how excited he is about this special mandolin. We're doing this one-of-a-kind *all-black* Collings MT-2 oval using the best sounding Super Secret special "ugly" wood he has, and we're adding some funk with a mother of toilet seat, errr... pearloid headstock veneer and a bound pearloid pickguard. Just for fun. You know it will be killer....Black is back. SOLD (MB) SOLD
Collings MT-O mandolin
Sunburst
and just perfect (NEW) Another MT-Oval and it is superb! Perfectly straight Engelmann spruce on highly flamed maple - all dressed up in that simply delicious honey amber satin finish. This mandolin sounds AMAZING! Loud, warm, full - holy smokes they've gone and done it again. Like # 1890 shown above, this one (#1891) is the last of the *prototypes* of the MT-oval and you'll notice it has a ivoroid-bound soundhole, but it has no rosette. The production models will have a rosette around the soundhole. We think this one looks elegantly plain, simply perfect, without the rosette. Very pretty Engelmann spruce on this and nicely figured maple...should last just a few days.....
Collings MT2 custom
blackface
(SOLD) (USED) A nice used Collings blackface! Beautiful maple back, ADIRONDACK spruce top, gold hardware, white tuner knobs, armrest , and strap button in heel. A fantastic sounding mandolin with just a little honest player wear and plenty of mojo. This Bumble Bee has been SOLD. Thanks B! SOLD
Collings MT custom
BLONDE!
(SOLD) (USED) Collings MT mandolin - Our best seller - and clearly the best buy in a pro quality satin finish mandolin - the Collings MT model. Don't settle for less. This is a 2007 custom model - another special request - blonde with ivoroid binding added. Collings has stopped offering blonde MT mandolins, as the "blond - worthy" maple is too expensive for a mandolin in this price range. He saves the premium maples now for his $4500 and $10,000 MF and MF5 mandolins. This is one of the last of the beautiful blond MT mandolins. We sold it new last year before the blonds were exiled. We sell a LOT of Collings mandolins and guitars. It is very unusual for us to get an MT mandolin back on trade. It is almost unheard of to get a blonde back. Like going back to the prom with your best girl. She is rare, she is fine, she is precious, and she sings. She is SOLD. SOLD
Collings MT2Vsb (SOLD) (USED) A second - a USED Collings MT-2 VARNISH sunburst mandolin. Sold new here last year for $4,230. Also played well for one year - nicely broken in (a few dings and scratches) and very open sounding. Strap button installed. Another great buy on a serious and expertly set up varnish mandolin - fresh updated pics showing the dings and strap button and picture # 5 shows an extreme close-up and exaggerated (area circled in red) picture of a varnish flaw on the top. GREAT sounding mandolin - wide open sounding. SOLD

Blonde and Blackface
(SOLD) Another custom MT2, because we care. This beauty is one of a kind, and quite unusual. The folks at Collings call it "The Bumble Bee" as it has a back of natural blond highly figured Big Red Leaf maple (gloss finish of course) and an Adirondack spruce top finished in black! Kind of a yellow jacket Killer Bee kinda thing. Got spring fever? Watch out for that stinger. A very classy looking chop box with a ring and a woof that makes you forget Winter. SOLD Thanks Phil! Collings MT2 SB-V
(Varnish)
(SOLD) We've been asking relentlessly and waiting very patiently for one of these to rise to the top. Some of us believe "A" model mandolins sound as good (perhaps better) than their florentine brethren. So round, so fiirm, so fully packed. Ask Tim O'brien. Here it is - a Collings MT2 "V" model in the new varnish finish. 2 piece wide grain big leaf red maple back, Adirondack top. The varnish combined with the softer red maple makes for a comparatively warm but punchy mandolin. A sternum rattler. Prepare to have your heart stolen. Breathtakingly beautiful, and a sound that makes the instrument seem somehow inexpensive. Serious value in an heirloom grade instrument. Buy a mandolin built and signed by the Lloyd Loar of his generation while you can. Call it your retirement fund. $ 4,725 - SOLD (CB) SOLD
Collings MT2-V
Birdseye Blonde (Varnish)
(SOLD) Botticelli's Birdseye Blonde (NEW) Bust my britches! Now c'mon, face it....if you've spent any time on these pages, you know we have some mighty good stuff here. But there's stuff and then there is stuff. When it comes to mandolins, we are particularly fond of birdseye maple, and we haven't had a good helping of it in a while, but Zazoom, Collings put a heapin' helpin' of it on us with this bird dog! This baby will make you stand up and shout! We offer another dazzling birdseye blonde (varnish) mandolin from our Botticelli collection......magnificent, but sold before we really got to know her... Let's build another! SOLD
Collings MT2-SB (SOLD) Recent arrival - Collings' incomparable A model - This one features Solid carved beautifully QUILTED maple back & sides, carved ADIRONDACK spruce top, tone bar bracing, gold hardware, sunburst finish. Full ivoroid binding with purfling around top, back, fretboard & peghead. Radiused ebony fretboard, pearl Collings logo and a decorative flourish in peghead. Hi Gloss lacquer finish. Oh my, this one has that throaty lightness of a Nugget, the balance and zing of a Collings, and the feel of butter. One incredibly sweet mandolin. You won't want to pay $4000 (or more) for a scroll after you experience this A model. Sorry, this one only lasted a day :-) Thanks Ken! SOLD
Collings MT2sb
Birdseye Sunburst custom
(SOLD) (NEW) MT2sb custom (lacquer) with beautifully figured hard BIRDSEYE maple back, Red spruce top, gold hardware, and *tortoise* bindings. We love the look. Collings MT2 SB custom (SOLD) (NEW) This one took some arm twisitng! It was worth the effort and worth the wait. For those afflicted with FAT fingers (like me) here's a little extra neck. Special order for store stock. We've been getting requests for custom neck (wider neck and low profile) Collings mandolins to match some of our other custom builders. This is our first custom neck Collings (more on order) and has a *slightly* wider 1 and 3/16" nut width (normal nut width is 1 and 1/8"). The custom neck is a $150 upcharge. For the fat-fingered among us, a little extra wiggle room perhaps. Room for error? Never on a Collings! A drop-dead gorgeous mandolin with nice silking in the top and that extra comfortable neck! Great bark, typical Collings sizzle. I always say someone buys their first mandolin for how it looks, the second for how it sounds, and their final mandolin for how it *feels*. This one has got all three bases covered. $3,650 SOLD
Collings MT2-SB (SOLD) This magnificent MT2 features exceptional solid carved three dimensional BIRDSEYE maple back & sides which can only be described as "biblical." This is the wood Boticelli would have carved, if Boticelli had carved wood. The top is carved ADIRONDACK spruce with tone bar bracing, gold Collings cast tailpiece and Gotoh tuners, and high gloss sunburst finish. I hope, but cannot promise, that this heirloom quality instrument will remain in stock longer than our last two MT2s (one day each). This one went quickly to a fine and deserving North Carolina home. Reservations accepted for our next one SOLD
Collings MT2

MT2s turn over VERY quickly here, for good reason. Check out the deatil on the F hole - marvel at the detailisimo!! Look at the wood, Would ya? My oh my, I am tempted to make with the blond jokes (do I go with Angie Dickinson or Madonna?) but no, it would be beneath the dignity of this fine instrument to stoop to that. No funnies for this one - this mandolin is pure sex on the beach. Git down gorgeous with a rattling throaty tone. Collings MT (SOLD) I have a dear friend who is a serious audiophile. He likes to say "any fool can build a loudspeaker for $10,000 that will sound good - I am impressed by the guy who builds a good $300 speaker". Mix A-4 (SOLD) (USED) Exc (2007) A fine high end professional grade A-4 style model oval hole mandolin from the carbon fiber wizards at Millenium Acoustic Design a.k.a New-MAD. It is the result of a collaboration between Peter Mix, Will Kimble and Matt Dunham and brings with it decades of devotion to mandolin-family instruments and their construction coupled with state-of-the-art carbon fiber fabrication process. It is a fine sounding mandolin with a great (Shertler) pickup and a James tailpiece. Good stuff, and practially bullet proof. Carbon fiber is exceptionally strong, lightweight and durable. It does not absorb moisture or dry out and it is not sensitive to temperature extremes. This alone makes it a great material for stringed instruments which are generally very delicate and tend to suffer from extremes of temperature and humidity. The fact that carbon fiber is considerably stronger than steel is yet another attractive feature. The ultimate festival instrument. Proceed with confidence fearing no campfire, downpour, ice storm, or heatwave. You have Robo-Mando and you are invincible. SOLD

Phoenix NeoClassical (SOLD) (NEW) We are huge fans of this model - as we are of all Phoenix mandolins, but we have to confess a special affection for this model. For our mandolin orchestra and those of Celtic influence.....the charming and visceral NeoClassical Phoenix.. This model is designed for light gauge strings (comes with Thomastik 154-K) and responds to a very light touch. The "NeoClassical" moniker may be slightly restrictive, as this mandolin covers so many bases, but is so exhuberantly musical that the well earned NeoClassical name has stuck. Don't let that stop you from getting one to play Irish, old-time, Jazz (or anything other than Bluegrass I would say) Priced at $3,600 All Phoenix mandolins include a very nice blue (Eastman) fiberglass case. SOLD SOLD

This model is designed for light gauge strings and responds to a very light touch. Reserved for one of our favorite players, a man who deserves the best. (DM) Wow, add our names to the list of people who are "startled by the loudness and light weight" (as Rolfe says) of the NeoClassical. A secret "weapon grade" mandolin. Just an amazingly light and responsive mandolin - set up perfectly with Thomastik 154-K strings - nice low tension with piano like response. The "NeoClassical" moniker may be slightly restrictive, as this mandolin covers so many bases, but is so exhuberantly musical that the well earned NeoClassical name has stuck. Rigel Q-95 (SOLD) (USED) (Exc++) These are cool. These Q-95 Rigel mandolins are voiced to replicate the sweet sound of vintage A-style oval-hole mandolins, most of which are beginning to show their age (and finding a good one is becoming more of a crap shoot.) The Rigel Q-95 has the look, feel and sound of the best classic pre-1920 oval hole instruments. The real nice 1916 Gibson A- (above) and this Rigel have*very* similar tone - but this Q-95 has some pretty serious technical innovations like radiused sides, maple neck with GRAPHITE reinforcement rod for maximum stiffness without added weight, radiused fretboard with fat frets, gold Grover tuners and Rigel cast tailpiece, and a great sounding piezo pickup installed! She's ready to plug and play. This Q-95 was traded here on a new Collings mandolin. No foolin...This Rigel is in excellent ++ condition, with little or no wear (could pass for new) and is nicely set up. It is currently strung with Thomastik 154M Orchestra strings which are just the thing for classical mandolin or Gypsy jazz. The thing practically plays itself and looks cool too. Be very careful when looking at pre 1920's Gibsons - you can find LOTS of fixer-uppers out there, and you can buy yourself a real mess...or you can buy a modern mandolin like this one that captures the spirit of those "teen" Gibsons perfectly. These Q95s just hit the market recently and received great well-deserved reviews. Unfortunately there will be no more available. If you thought you missed your chance at one...well here ya go, Django !!! SOLD

Sams Sams A model (Exc.+) An excellent nearly new (built April 2005) Todd Sams A model. Crafted by Todd Sams in Athens OH. Todd works at Stewart-MacDonald and builds a great flat top steel string guitar as well as a take-no-prisoners mandolin. The Western Pennsylvania - Eastern Ohio bluegrass crowd likes their mandolin to roar. This is Stiver country and Buckeye country and now Sams enters the fray with a low arch big bottom serious A-5 eight stringer that kicks some butt. This is a very strong mandolin with great chop. Plenty of bark for the bluegrass crowd, for sure. This thing could double as a watchdog. This one just arrived and needed a thorough cleaning and re-stringing, but even through dead strings we could hear the power in there. Big honking "A" string. This thing cuts. You'd be wise to consider this little wood chopper. Travel-lite style case. Chrome strap button installed in neck heel. With fresh J-75 strings, this thing is a sternum rattling squirrel killer and will not be here long. SOLD
Stelling S5 (SOLD) (USED) Exc, very strong professional grade Monteleone-style F, muscular warm tone, very refined, one piece quilted maple back, Englemann top, radiused fretboard, Monteleone tailpiece, built in the US by Ward Elliot for Stelling in 1997, recent setup by Geoff Stelling. A simply GREAT mandolin. Check out the pics with Mike Compton and David Long. "Whoa Mama", Mike said. This one barks with the Big Dogs. $6,500 SOLD

Same basic list of features as the S5. Englemann top, Monteleone tailpiece, two piece back, rectangular tweed HSC, a strong mandolin with good bottom end. Stiver Stiver A model (SOLD) These are near and dear to our heart - a very good condition mid 90's (July 1994) Stiver A model. Crafted by Lou Stiver right here in Western Pennsylvania. A strong mandolin with great bottom end. Stiver mandolins are highly prized and a great value! This one just arrived and needs a thorough cleaning and shop set up, if I can put it down long enough to get around to it. You can chop wood with this thing. These notes pound your ribcage. The notes pop off this thing like a fastball into a catcher's mitt. Recently re-fretted by Lou Stiver. Hard case. SOLD
Stiver F model (SOLD) (USED) We love these. Lou Stiver is our pal and he does a lot of mandolin repair work for us (great work indeed!) but we cannot sell his new mandolins (we wish we could but the good folks at Elderly Instruments have earned that exclusive right by doing a great job for Lou all these years. Indeed, I bought my own Stiver A model from Elderly - 15 years ago - anyway, enough about that. We do get to handle a fair number of used Stivers every year (not very many, because people don't give them up) and here is a dandy! A very nice 1986 Stiver F model. This one is near perfect except it has a good deal of fret wear (it has been played and oh boy has it matured tonally) and the original bridge has been replaced with one of those *^%$*#@ pickup monstrosities, and around the scroll, some red dye has leached from a strap into the finish and binding (shown in pics). We are sending this mandolin to Lou Stiver for a total refret (with the more modern jumbo frets,) a new Loar style bridge, a general tune-up, and to see if he can wizard away the red stain. When it returns, it will essentially be a "new" 1986 Stiver F model. Here's your chance to own a 20 year old "new" mandolin from one of the best builders in the world. The *^%$*#@ pickup will be included with the sale, tossed in a plastic bag in the accessory pocket where it belongs! OHSC (rough shape heavy rectangular case) included. Other cases available. (Calton, Ameritage, whatever...) A beefy, barking, bluegrassing, beast of a mandolin. One I'd surely keep for myself if I didn't have this pesky predisposition to put the best stuff "out there" where it belongs. Woof woof! Didn't last the weekend! SOLD
Stiver Stiver A model (SOLD) (USED) These are near and dear to our heart - a fantastic condition 1989 Stiver A model. Crafted by Lou Stiver right here in Western Pennsylvania. Vern Bryant F-5 (USED) VG condition 1993 Bryant F-5. SOLD

Weber Fern (SOLD) (USED) Bruce Weber's signature appears on some of the finest modern Gibsons we have ever heard and I don't think they have been the same since they lost him. When Bruce sits down to build one of his own Fern models, he draws from a deep well of experience. This mandolin is super clean, literally as close to mint as a used instrument can be, with GREAT F-5 sound and *superb* fit and finish. A strong, loud mandolin with great bluegrass bottom end. Extremely high quality (the best we have seen) rectangular (rolled and pleated) luggage-grade Weber-logo hard case. This mandolin has the upgraded Weber bridge, armrest and tailpiece. The list price on these when new is $6000 - and this is indistinguishable from new. This one is on consignment and is priced to sell VERY quickly. Indeed! SOLD. SOLD
