Guitars

Acoustic Music Works keeps about three hundred acoustic guitars in stock. These include the finest factory built steel string and resonator guitars, as well as a few archtops, and the impressive electric guitars from Bill Collings. We feature the region's best selection of professional grade steel string guitars from Collings, Huss & Dalton, Bourgeois, Goodall, Beard, Lowden, National Resophonic, Breedlove, Gallagher, and Eastman. Since we take trades and consignments, we often have great (used and vintage) Martins, Gibsons, Santa Cruz, Merrill, Froggy Bottom, Benedetto, Flammang, Tippin, Olson, Lucas, Stelling and other top brands. We also carry intermediate grade instruments from Breedlove and Blueridge, and from time to time, custom guitars by individual luthiers.

Here is a sampling of our guitar inventory. We buy, we sell, we trade, and we invite consignments. We do our best to keep the website updated. The occasional price flub or typographical error should be interpreted as folksy charm, not deviousness. No auto-responders here, all e-mails receive a personal, prompt and courteous reply. We get a *lot* of e-mail, and we reply to every message. If you don't receive a reply, please call or try again as that means the mail server or our overly assertive spam-filter is on the fritz. Stuff happens.

For internet shoppers, we know that buying a guitar sight unseen over the phone or internet can be a bit of a "mail order bride" experience, but we have shipped close to 5000 instruments over the last ten years to 12 countries and 43 states, so it *can* be done. Please call or write. You will find us to be knowledgable, honest, direct, and fair.

Please note: Brazilian rosewood guitars can be sold and shipped within the continental USA only.

Collings guitars are made in Austin, Texas, and are arguably the finest steel string guitars being built today. We are convinced they will be tomorrow's collectible instruments. They exhibit remarkable craftsmanship, and offer exceptional playability, stability, responsiveness, volume and punch. We keep a wide and varied inventory, and fill a LOT of special orders, but Collings guitars sell through here very quickly. We particularly like their mahogany, maple, koa, and Brazilian rosewood guitars and their use of Adirondack and German spruce and optional varnish finish, but honestly, they seem incapable of building a bad guitar. We've done our homework and listened, listened, listened, and really know what makes these guitars tick. Collings instruments just fly out of here (more than 100 per year). If you see something you like, please call. They go fast. Certain models are downright impossible to keep in stock, and we always have a bunch (currently more than seventy) on order. We try to keep close to 100 in stock at all times. While we concentrate on their high end, custom, varnish, and one of a kind models, even their standard models are amazing and can be the guitar of a lifetime for any player. We have stock orders scheduled into 2014 but have build slots held in reserve to accomodate special orders. Every so often, we have something VERY special in the works or tucked away in back that does not get listed on our website. Some folks ask us not to display their custom order treasures. We take a lot of pre-sold special orders, many of which don't get listed here. If you don't see what you are looking for, please call or e-mail. We love to talk about Collings guitars and we invite custom orders. If you have a used Collings to trade or consign, we have a "want list" for certain models and we are fair and we go the extra mile. Used Collings guitars hold value and they sell very quickly. Try us first!

Pete Huttlinger model
Just arrived (NEW) If you have been around acoutic guitars *at all* you know who Pete Huttlinger is. Pete is one of the finest guitarists in the world. Pete plays Collings guitars. Here is what he says about them: "I play Collings guitars. They are made in Austin, TX and quite frankly, I believe that they are the best guitars being built today. The model that I play is an OM1.I also have an OM1A." The OM1 has a Sitka spruce top and the OM1A has an Adirondack spruce top. They are otherwise identical. They are both very, very fine recording instruments. The OM1 has a lower action for my live performances. For that reason it has a little less volume." Pete, you may have heard, has a very serious medical condition. Being a small company with a big heart, Collings will produce a run of fifty Pete Huttlinger Signature Models, and $1,000 from each guitar ($500 from Collings, $500 from participating dealer) will go to the Pete Huttlinger medical fund. We are pleased to be associated with this effort, and were glad to order eight of the guitars. This first one, shown here, is sold. The guitars will all have cutaways and 1 and 3/4" nut width. This first one weighs 3.7 pounds and is just crazy good. Please inquire about the upcoming PH models. SOLD

Collings D1 V
custom
Just Arrived (NEW) For store stock: People are always asking Moe what is the BEST BUY in a Collings dreadnought? Well here is Moe's standard answer: A lightly built mahogany D1 with 1 and 3/4" nut width, VINTAGE NOW neck, built without TONGUE BRACE and with ADIRONDACK braces. Face it, Adirondack spruce is a $1000 option and while it is "the Holy Grail of Tonewoods", it is not appropriate for a picker with a light touch. While all us macho types like to think we "need" Adirondack spruce, truth be told, most of us just do not. The Sitka topped custom D1 is warm and loud, with the added stiffness and headroom provided by Adirondack braces. This guitar can be set up low for a strummer with light gauge strings, or for a flatpicker with medium gauge strings. It can be the dreadnought you've always wanted - the one you actually play! It is all the guitar most of us really need and it is ALL Collings for only $3,875 list and $3,485 here at AMW. You could pay a lot more and get less. $3,485

Vintage Now
Just arrived (NEW) For those who appreciate a "slightly" fuller neck profile, the Collings "Vintage Now" neck just cannot be beat. 1 and 3/4" nut width, 2 and 4/16" saddle spacing, slightly thicker profile. We find this neck adds a certain fullness to the tone, it just does. And then there is this: This one has EXCEPTIONALLY FINE Adirondack spruce, for those who care about such things. Just look at those amber waves of grain! That's some good wood. But I do not have to tell you that. List price $ 4,875 $4,387
Collings CW MhA - VARN CW Mahogany
VARNISH
(NEW) The iconic Collings CW in mahogany and Adirondack spruce dressed to kill in va-va-va-VARNISH. A model that quite often successfully takes the buyer off the market forever, a CW is about as good as a guitar can be. Every CW we get is killer. A CW in varnish? OVER-kill. Hooo Boy!! Honest to Pete....This CW really kicks butt. 4.0 pounds, with a fullness of tone that is remarkable, really. Played side by side with a varnish D1A, the D1A has slightly more percussive woof, but there in an openness and mid-range sparkle to this particular CW and rumble in the upper bass that slices and dices, seriously, like nothing we've ever heard. In that it is our first VARNISH CWMhA, by the way, I suppose that is why it sounds like something we have not heard. Duh.... Is it better than the D1A-Varnish? NO - but it is different enough that it would be *really* hard to choose between the two. List Price: $7,325 $6,592
Collings CWMhASB

Oh yes, and VARNISH of course. We've always loved the Collings CW models and could think of no way to improve them, until varnish came along. Now: your chance to own perhaps the ultimate flatpicking guitar - a Collings CW in mahogany with varnish finish. List price: $7,925. Our price: $7,132. Half the guys who call me tell me they are hoping to find a varnish CW. Ordered for store stock. List Price: $7,775 $7,132

Collings DS1A custom (NEW) OK...you know how we worship Collings D1A guitars. "The one to have when you are having only one." Well, every now and then we run into someone who wishes a D1A had a little less bite and a little more snuggle, a little less cut and a little more hug, a little less fight and a little more love. These folks tend to play with fingers as often as flatpick, and they tend to sing more often, and their need to kill banjos is less critical. For these folks we often recommend the DS1A, a first cousin to the D1A. A guitar where the neck joins the body at the twelfth fret and the bridge resides in the middle of the lower bout and drives the lower frequencies all the way to Poughkeepsie. If you have ever said a D1A is "too big, too bad, too bright, too brittle, too this too that, maybe you should meet its cousin, the DS1A. The bigger bottomed D1A. This is a custom model with a solid headstock, a style three backstrip, and a 1 and 3/4" nut width. It's good. List Price: $5,300 $4,770

Collings electrics
Turn it up!! We're all about *acoustic* music here, but we've been drawn to the proverbial crossroads (turns out they are right outside of Austin, Texas) and encountered a very persuasive gentleman there - that Bill Collings fellow is a little intense, but he made a very compelling argument so we traded him our acoustic soul. To see the result, check out our new and positively brilliant line of Collings electric guitars...we find them to be electric guitars for grownups - with incredible fit and finish, great hand wound pickups which produce a fat sound that has a lot of air in it. Clean, bestowed of Texas Twang, sophisticated sounding electrics that carry on the great Collings sonic tradition. They are a players dream. A full stick of butter. Beautifully crafted new American classics. We try to keep two dozen in stock at all times.

Our favorite mid size guitar, the Collings OM1 with Adirondack top, style one sunburst, 1 and 3/4" nut width, style 3 backstrip, CW style pickguard, and CW bridge (2 and 1/4" string spacing rather than the 2 and 3/16" standard) and drum roll, please the Collings VARNISH finish. One ding, some fingernail impressions around the rosette and pickguard and some mild case burn on the back. If these cosmetic things bother you, you should not buy this guitar, or any varnish guitar. If you want tone until Tuesday and the quality of a truely exceptional Collings, you should own this guitar. List price or a new one (this one sold here in 2008) is $7,525. Our price $5,400 SOLD

Collings C-10gSB deluxe
DEEP BODY
SUNBURST
Just arrived (USED) The return of one of our very favorite custom models: This is a DEEP BODY C-10 deluxe (rosewood) in a mind-numbing dark sunburst with 1 and 3/4" nut width, and German Spruce top. We also added a flourish on the headstock, nickel Waverly tuners with ebony knobs, and tigerstripe pickguard. We also added the belly bridge just in case the buyer wants to run medium gauge strings. Strung with mediums, these deep body (dreadnought depth, remember) standard scale C-10s in rosewood have the power and volume of a big guitar (think Advanced Jumbo) but still have a comfortable footprint for playing while seated. It's like having a "sitting room CJ". We like the sound of that. The sound of EIRW/German is nothing short of spectacular! This guitar was purchased new here about six weeks ago. The customer has decided he prefers a larger (mahogany) guitar, and has purchased a varnish slope D. So this near-mint (looks brand new) custom C-10 is on the block. Here on consignment at a very good price. $4,500 SOLD

Collings Cowboy !
Just arrived (USED) Yippie-Ti-Yi-Oh, the original Collings Cowboy. These are very rare, maybe thirty total (?) and we have been privileged to handle seven or eight of them. This one is from the original batch (Jan 2001) and it is in excellent condition with FINE sound. Whenever we show these guitars, we get a strong reaction. Some are alarmed by its kitchiness. Some are put off by the bold strokes (it's a decal, actually) applied to such a fine high end guitar. But the minute they inspect it closely and play it, they "get" it. This is the Cow Boss of Cowboy guitars. It's a weekend at the rodeo with Bill Collings. This one has one unfortunate ding on the face (circled in red) but is otherwise real clean for a ten year old guitar that has been played. It's collectible, but it's got to be played. Off the charts, really. This cowboy sounds GREAT! Get along, little doggie. Standard scale, 1 and 3/4" nut width, Western Shade top, rope purfling, it's a Collings Cowboy. As Dolly Parton has been known to say: "It costs a lot of money to look this cheap!" SOLD

We can't decide where to start (or stop) gushing about this guitar. It is beautiful, that goes without saying (so why do we keep saying it?) but the sound....oooh...have you played any ten (make that eleven) year old Collings guitars? Ooooh. Forget anything you've thought or heard (or read) about new Collings being slightly "stiff" and wrap your arms and ears around a decade old Collings. They will have to send a search team out for you, because you will lose yourself in that guitar. Trust us. Collings KOA CJ with Adirondack spruce top, 1 and 3/4" nut width, dalmatian pickguard, abalone rosette, style three backstrip, ivoroid binding all over, and gold Waverlies. It's no longer a regional secret. Jeff Huss & Mark Dalton build mighty impressive guitars, and we're bustin' with pride to have one of the best selections in the world, and to have been named their Top Dealer for 2004, 2005 and again for 2006!!

A lighter build style than the Collings guitars but with similar fit and finish, Huss & Dalton's tone is often described as "woody", "balanced", "alive", and "open". We, literally, can't get enough of them. Sure, they build *GREAT* Bluegrass guitars - that's a given. But they don't stop there. We particularly like their 12 fret OO and other small body guitars, their mid-jumbo guitars, their use of wood bindings, and their sunburst finishes. Their maple, walnut, and koa guitars are among the best we've heard. With over 3000 guitars under their belts now, these guys are shipping consistently amazing instruments. They also offer custom guitars of exceptional value - with comparatively reasonable up-charges for exotic tonewoods and custom features. This list represents a *portion* of our Huss & Dalton inventory and orders. We usually have build slots on reserve. If you don't see what you are looking for, please call or e-mail. We love to talk about Huss & Dalton guitars and we invite special orders. Don't settle on your next guitar until you have tried a Huss & Dalton! As one of Huss & Dalton's top dealers, we're always looking for more. If you have a used Huss & Dalton to trade or consign, we go the extra mile. We know what makes these guitars tick and we know good lumber when we hear it. Try us first!

Huss & Dalton TDR custom
Honduran Rosewood
Bearclaw Italian Spruce top
(NEW)The TDR is the classic traditional dreadnought. No one builds a finer traditional dreadnought than Huss & Dalton. Over the years we have been asked to spec the loudest dreadnoughts that will cut through a Bluegrass jam. We have found consistently that Honduran rosewood (even moreso than Brazilian) provides the ultimate in cut and volume. H&D have a particulalry good feel for the Honduran, and a particularly good supply. We generally top the Honduran guitars with Sitka, but have been persuaded by the good people at H&D to try the slightly stiffer Italian Red spruce for even more volume, increased sustain, and complexity of tone. This one was ordered with drop-in saddle instead of the standard cut thru saddle and without any aging toner so that the subtle bearclaw figure in the Italian spruce could show. Honest: If you are looking for the ultimate bluegrass dreadnought and you haven't tried one of these, your search is not yet complete. List Price: $5,250 $4,725

This one was ordered with drop-in saddle instead of the standard cut thru saddle and without any aging toner so the beautiful Red spruce (and it *is* beautiful) shines like the sun. Huge sound with great clarity. This is a GREAT guitar! This would be the anchor of a hot bluegrass picking session for sure. If you are looking for a great bluegrass dreadnought and if you haven't tried one of these, your search is not yet complete. Bang, zoom! Ka-channnggg! This guitar really has what it takes. List: $4,150 $3,735

Huss & Dalton CM Custom KOA (USED) One of the finest guitars to ever grace our humble tone emporium was this one about which we said: "OK you are Huss & Dalton - you've built a thousand guitars, you've turned a corner, what do you do for # 1001? You go down to the wood room and pick put the choicest pieces of koa and cedar you can lay your hands on, visit the abalone stash, and set out to build the guitar of a lifetime. Here it is: Serial # 1001 (2004 NAMM show guitar) Custom CM, rare and exotic AAA grade koa back and sides, AAAA Cedar top, 1 and 3/4" nut width, pyramid bridge, rosewood body binding looks great against the koa and dark cedar. Deep bodied auditorium (non-cutaway) 12 fret (24.9" scale) guitar. Might be the best guitar we have ever handled. SOLD - headed to France! When Huss and Dalton turned another corner (2000 guitars) we asked to reserve serial #2001 for this guitar where we've re-visited the koa/cedar theme and ordered this one with the same neck, the same cedar/koa combination, but we've gone with a solid headstock (with koa knobbed gold Waverlies thank you very much) and rosewood binding all over and left off the abalone top border. Warm and plentiful - an amazing fingerstyle guitar. Almost classical-guitar like, but with the cool snap and sizzle of steel strings. A deep thinking person's guitar. An immediate favorite. Can be flatpicked moderately, but honestly, it prefers your fingers to your plectrum. Traded back here on a smaller guitar. The guitar is a steal at this price. ($3,750) SOLD

Bourgeois Piccolo Parlor Speaking of "pretty little things..." check out the unbelievably cool Piccolo Parlor guitar from the capable hands of Dana Bourgeois (NEW) Do we like it? It's just *killer* really. Now, of course we do not mean "killer" in the "Banjo Killer" sense, although Dana has been known to build a few of those. This is clearly a Victorian era style parlor guitar with the subtlety and balance that make it ideal for those private parlor moments just between you and your favorite glass of Chardonnay and your Beagle, after a busy day of making the bacon. Seriously: Don't mistake this for a travel guitar or gimmicky high strung guitar or trophy case curio - this is a loud and full sounding (25" scale) SERIOUSLY small guitar. Designed from the ground up for balanced attack and full projection. The back and sides are mahogany. The top is Adirondack spruce. Moe likes that. This guitar is as surprising as it is satisfying. Dana will build fifteen of these very unique guitars. This is number seven. We will also get number fifteen (sometime in 2011) which will have back and sides of Madagascar Rosewood. The list price on #15 (with MadRose) will be $5,595. SOLD

Bourgeois Custom OM
Pao rosewood
Just arrived (USED) A custom Vintage OM with 60+ year old Pao rosewood back and sides, with premium Adirondack top, black/white top border, fancy cocobolo binding, 1 and 3/4" nut width, pyramid bridge. With the rapidly diminishing availability of Brazilian rosewood, all the builders are looking for appropriate substitutes for their premium guitars. About Pao rosewood, Dana says "Pao Rosewood is an african wood that looks a bit like Honduran Rosewood. Tonally it's in the same general category as Brazilian, Madagascar, Honduran Rosewood and Cocobolo. Within each of these species there is considerable variation in tone qualities, with condiderable overlapping between species. A good set of Pao can sound a lot like Brazilian Rosewood, or can have something unique that is rarely found in Brazilian." The first one of these was shown at IBMA and drew these comments: "This guitar was the sleeper of the show. You might imagine at a Bluegrass Show, an OM wouldn't get much attention but the 60+ year old West African Pao Rosewood set used on this guitar made it LOUD and rich and one of the loudest and best OM's we've heard. Dana had a few sets of this fine *old* wood, and would like to find more! The sound is full of detail without being boomy at all - Brazilian style overtone with a thick sustain. $3,250

Just arrived (NEW) A 12 fret cutaway resophonic wonder, same pearloid headstock, maple neck, 1.825" nut width, and 25" scale. G-R-E-A-T sounding reso with that big open sound - really a versatile guitar. According to Bob Brozman, "The Reso-Rocket is sonically a hybrid between the single cone and the tricone sounds! (60% single/40% tricone). It is a single cone guitar, but the tricone-like upper grilles and the more closed coverplate both change the way the air flows above and below the cone. It seems that the more open upper grilles contribute a lot to the tricone sound. Another GREAT feature of this guitar is the cutaway allowing access to all the highest frets. This instrument is VERY loud, and it has tremendous cutting power, making it a great axe for all kinds of music...JUST ARRIVED List Price: $2,812 SOLD

Breedlove OM 42 style custom Private Stock (NEW) We keep a few (well, more than a few) good guitars tucked away here at AMW, and we bring them out when the market suggests that timing is right. Since the recovery is on and the Big Dogs are spending again, we've started pulling a few special pieces out of the vault. Here is one really GREAT sounding custom BRAZILIAN rosewood OM with sweet German spruce on top. This is one (Number Nine of Ten) of the OM Revival "Calendar" models Kim Breedlove built in 2007. 1 and 3/4" nut, abalone snowflake inlay, 42 style abalone top border, Waverly tuners with ebony knobs, and 25.5" scale. We've really come to appreciate Breedlove's more traditional "Revival" series guitars and this guitar was one of the ones that won us over. Just a great high end flatpick or fingerstyle guitar that stands in good company here at AMW. #9838 The list price is $10,250. Our price is MUCH MUCH lower. INQUIRE $7,175
Breedlove OOO 41 style custom Just arrived (NEW) We spotted this beauty at the Summer NAMM Show in Nashville and it followed us home. A really GREAT sounding BRAZILIAN rosewood OOO with amazing (in appearance and tone) heavily bearclawed Sitka spruce on top. 1 and 3/4" nut, slotted headstock, pyramid bridge, 12 fret neck joint, abalone snowflake inlay, 41 style abalone top border, and 25.5" scale. We've really come to appreciate Breedlove's newer more traditional "Revival" series guitars and one strum and this one requires no more explaining - that's for sure. They've earned our respect with this series. Just a great high end flatpick or fingerstyle guitar that stands in good company here at AMW. #13169 The list price is $9,250. Our price is MUCH MUCH lower. INQUIRE $6,450
Breedlove OOO KOA custom Just arrived (NEW) We are big fans of koa wood here and we think a 12 fret OOO showcases that warm and clean reverbery thing that good koa guitars have. This is a good koa guitar. We used to say about the Revival series that they sounded liek Martins and played like Taylors but we think that sells them short. They have a tradtional voice with modern playability and they stand on their own. We find they are very versatile and they play well with others. This custom guitar has tightly flamed koa with Sitka spruce on top. 1 and 3/4" nut, slotted headstock, pyramid bridge, 12 fret neck joint, and 25.5" scale. You'll continue to see a lot of the Breedlove Revivals here at AMW. We think they represent the best value in a traditional guitar today. #12640 The list price on this koa custom is $4,899. Our price is MUCH MUCH lower. $3,450
Breedlove Chris Hillman FF mandolin Just arrived (NEW) After a few too many mamosas for breakfast, we almost tripped over this beauty at the Summer NAMM Show in Nashville. After one course of Whiskey Before Breakfast on it, I had to ask "is this a BREEDLOVE?". Now I do not mean to sound critical as we have always carried and always liked Breedlove mandolins, and feel they have a unique voice that complements our other more "traditional" sounding mandolin lines. Well I am here to tell you, it wasn't the mamosas (or the Whiskey) this mandolin has bark and snort and throaty gurgle like the big boys. Imagine our surprise (or not) when we noticed the special label and were informed that this is the CHRIS HILLMAN Signature model prototype. Now that makes sense - a mandolin designed for and in cooperation with Chris Hillman would need to make the grade, and it does. We like that Breedlove uses the 1 and 3/16" nut, abalone fern inlay, Loar style bridge, and an abbreviated ebony pickguard on this model. We also like the exceptional flame maple on the back and the Adirondack spruce on top. And the dark sunburst is perfect. If you've been to AMW, you know we've got rooms full of killer mandolins. Welcome one more to the fold. #13288 The list price is $5,350. Our price is MUCH MUCH lower. INQUIRE $3,750
Breedlove King Koa Just Arrived (NEW) Our favorite Breedlove. The koa and cedar King Koa model with mermaid inlay. Breedlove Classic XII 12 String Just Arrived (NEW) Jumbo 12 string with Striped Ebony (posessing the tonal richness of Rosewood with a bit more volume and a specific gravity matching the best Brazilian Rosewood. It has a striking, distinctive dark and light brown, black and green variegation. It makes a truly exceptional twelve string. Controlled by the government of New Guinea, but not an endangered species) back and sides, Sitka spruce top, ivoroid binding. We think these are among the finest 12 string guitars available. Can be tuned to concert pitch with light gauge strings - delivers big sound, great intonation, superb playability. List Price: $5,899 Includes Breedlove case. Call or e-mail for sale prices. SOLD

BOZO 1977 Bell Western cutaway
all abalone
Brazilian
Just arrived (USED) Here's something you don't see every day. A Brazilian rosewood Bozo Bell Western cutaway. Built as a custom order by Bozo Podunavac in 1977. This is one fine guitar. Bozo's Croatian heritage is on full display on this very ornate guitar. With impeccable workmanship and playabilty, Bozo guitars are highly prized. The list of players (Leo Kottke, John Fahey, Reverend Gary Davis) reads like a Who's Who. Heavily built but blanced and responsive like no other guitar from that era. Strung with light gauge Thomastik strings, this guitar plays like butter. It is unusual, fine, collectible, and worthy of the finest player. Itis priced accordingly. ON CONSIGNMENT - INQUIRE $22,000
Flammang GC-30
12 fret
Just arrived (USED) (EXC.) Another great consignment from a very good customer. This is our second Flammang (David Flammang of Greene, Iowa). It was built in 2002 and it wears serial # 76. It is a lightly built well mannered fingerstyle guitar that has our classical players here questioning their predilection toward nylon. Here again, this Flammang is built with a bit of refinement that is not aimed at the hairy of arm but it certainly jumps all over complex fingerstyle and blues and open tunings. Very light, with a very responsive top that likes to be played lightly, 12 fret Adirondack topped guitar rivals anything in the shop (1 and 3/4" nut width, V-neck, 3/32" low action) A great singer-songwriter, blues, open tuning guitar with a style. $3,250 ON CONSIGNMENT. New lower price! SOLD
Flammang D-30 black top Just arrived (USED) (EXC. +) Another great used guitar from a good customer. This is our first Flammang (David Flammang of Greene, Iowa). It was built in 2003 and it wears serial # 87. It is a lightly built exquisitely crafted guitar that is clearly built and set up to be played fingerstyle. It has no pickguard and the action is set at 5/64"! Unusual, at least for us, to think of a dreadnought as a "fingerstyle" guitar as a great majority of our dreadnoughts are heavily strung tools for hairy armed bluegrassers. This guitar is built with a bit of refinement that might disqualify it as a "bluegrass" guitar but it certainly excels at modern fingerstyle and blues and open tunings. It's a bit more pino than Pabst, a little more James Taylor than Jimmy Martin. Reminds us of a certain 1944 Martin D-18. Very light, advanced forward shifted X brace, scalloped. The fit and finish is about perfect, this lightly braced Adirodack topped guitar responds to a light touch and the tone is balanced, and the feel (1 and 23/32" nut width, V-neck, 5/64" low action)is un-real. ON CONSIGNMENT $2,950
Flammang EL (black) Just arrived (USED) (EXC. +) Another fine used Flammang guitar from a great customer. Here comes our coolest Flammang yet. It will be the "EL" model (Think vintage Gibson LG-1. Think short scale blues guitar. Think Robert Johnson. Think fast!) You know how good these are. This is one of three built for Greg Brown and comes to us through a New England instrument collector with a heart of gold. It's black all over, with mahogany back and sides and a tight grain sitka top. It has the 1 and 11/16" nut width and a 2 and 3/16" saddle spacing. It captures a vintage Gibsonesque vibe with the refinement of a modern flawlessly sculpted guitar. A dry blues box with champagne class presence and sustain. It "had" a custom Calton flite case with it. It was rightly priced at $3,850 with the Calton. Note: The Calton has been sold. The guitar is now priced at $3,250 with a "standard" case. The guitar is ON CONSIGNMENT. New LOWER price. $2,950
Flammang J-35 Just arrived (USED) (EXC. +) Another fine used Flammang guitar from a great customer. Wow. Just Wow. Now we're talking. A Flammang J-35 with mahogany back and sides and a positively inspired wild and rough grained Adirondack spruce top. It has the 1 and 3/4" nut width, 2 and 5/16" saddle spacing, Brazilian rosewood fretboard and bridge and is among the best short scale Gibson J35 recreations we have ever played. Here again, Flammang captures that vintage Gibsonesque vibe with the refinement of a modern flawlessly sculpted guitar. The guitar is extremely light at 3.7 pounds and is pictured here alongside Moe's personal 1941 J-35. The Flammang J-35 is right and righteously priced at $3,850 with a high grade Cedar Creek case. Looking for the "best" modern J-35? Dunno, but I wouldn't buy a different brand without considering this one first. The guitar and case are VERY clean - with just a few pleasant dings. The guitar is here ON CONSIGNMENT. SOLD
Flammang RS-35 Just arrived (USED) (EXC. +) Another fine used Flammang guitar from a great customer. We've had this guitar for a couple of weeks now. We apologize for not getting it listed sooner, but we just could not seem to put it down long enough to take pictures. It is *that* kind of guitar - one that catches you by surprise and makes you remember why you started playing guitar in the first place. True to the Roy Smeck tradition, this is a "jumbo dreadnought" with 16" lower bout that delivers HUGE tone, with big round bottom. It is built like a football player, with big round shoulders and a 12 fret neck. The guitar has presence to spare. Perfect for that Jackson Browne singer-songwriter type, or fingerstyle blues in drop-D (watch out!). It has the 1 and 3/4" nut width, Adirondack top (hide glue) and a Cedar Creek case. We cannot say enough good things about it. If this guitar size fits you, this could well be the one you've been searching for. Honest, just Killer! The guitar is here ON CONSIGNMENT. $3,450
Froggy Bottom K Just arrived (USED) (EXC. +) We do not get a lot of Froggy Bottom guitars here, but each one we get makes us wish we got more. This is Michael's best seller - the standard K model with high grade Honduran mahogany back and sides and Red (Adirondack) spruce top. Has the typical refined Froggy voice (deep and overtone rich with perfect balance) with easy playability. Plays like butter, rings like a bell. Mighty fine guitar! These go for $6,100 new - this is is a 2007 model in excellent condition. Includes original case which has a few scuffs. ON CONSIGNMENT. SOLD
Huss & Dalton DRH
(USED) - H&D's fine entry-level dreadnought. Very versatile. This one has some pretty deep dings on it. A player's guitar, for sure. Ready for festivals and jam sessions. Plays and sounds great. Nice step-up dreadnought, priced absolutely right, for someone suffering with a lesser guitar. A step into the big leagues, at a minor league price. SOLD
Kay 1950 M-1 upright bass Just arrived! (USED) A 1950 Kay M-1 bass in decent condition with excellent sound. All the typical wear and tear and dings - needs a setup and new strings but is fundamentally solid and ready to roll. Includes a decent bow (needs re-haired) and a nice carrying bag. $2,750
Randy
Lucas
LOM-21 Just arrived (USED) (EXC.-) Another fine heirloom-grade used guitar for your consideration. Built by highly regarded luthier, Randy Lucas , this "21" style pre-war style slot head Brazilian Orchestra model. She's got old growth Brazilian rosewood, Adiondack spruce top (no tongue brace) with Adirondack spruce and advanced forward-shifted (1" from soundhole) bracing. Her fabulous neck has the perfect 1 and 3/4" nut width and a 2 and 1/4" saddle spacing. Just like the Merrill guitars we have encountered, this Lucas just nails the vintage vibe. It feels and sounds like a good handcrafted Martin from the 1930's. Warm and rich, with exceptional attention to detail. Classic vintage voice with nicely figured Brazilan rosewood fret board and bridge. The back and sides are what we'd normally expect to see rated "AA" grade with 90% straight grain and a few worm holes. Tortoise binding, Waverly three-on-a-plate engraved bronze tuners, slotted peghead, cut thru saddle, herringbone rosette and center strip (no herringbone purfling on top - accurate for 21 style) fossil ivory bridge pins and end pin. Cosmetically, this fine guitar has some player wear, a few deep dings, and significant finish checking from some cold weather at late night jams at a fire hall in Oklahoma. Tonally, this fine guitar has very few equals. If you like 1930's Martins, you'll like this (1997) Lucas guitar. Trust us: VERY fine PRE-WAR sound with one of the most pleasing modified-V necks we have ever felt. The case is a beat up generic OM case. We can discuss case options. The guitar is rightly priced at $6,750 with the beater case or $6,950 with a new case, or $7,500 with used Calton case. It is special and it is ON CONSIGNMENT. $7,500
Martin 1947
D-18
Just arrived (USED) (1947) Always a pleasure to get another solid used Martin of this vintage - and solid she is. 1 and 11/16" nut, late 40's neck profile, non-scalloped braces, 4/32" action at 12th fret, medium tall saddle, tortoise binding, Braz. bridge and fretboard, recent fret replacement (new frets have little to no wear) and GREAT sound. Very good condition. Many dings, typical belt buckle rash, capo scars on the neck, some overspray on the neck, a plugged 1/4" hole from a pickup many years ago, a top cleat and brace repair under the pickguard area, and considerable wear around the pickguard and soundhole. All in all, condition and repairs that we expect to see on a guitar of this age. Tonally? Very strong example, with great clear bottom end and balance. very loud. A VERY good sounding '47 Martin. A real player's D-18 for a serious picker. These do not come along very often... SOLD
Merrill C-28
Brazilian
Just arrived (USED) (2002) As "traditional" guitars go, there are only a few builders who have successfully managed to capture that vintage tone, light build, and authentic feel. The one contemporary builder that we think really nails that "vintage Martin" thing is Jim Merrill. Here is the perfect example - a Merrill "28" style dreadnought - serial number 00028 - a herringbone C-28 in vertical grain multi-colored Brazilian rosewood with Adirondack spruce top, nut width is a 30's "vintage" - measuring just *slightly* wider than 1 and 11/16" yet narrower than 1 and 3/4" - let's call it 1 and 23/32" with the proper period 2 and 5/16" bridge spacing and cut through saddle. Advanced forward shifted X brace, Adirondack spruce top braces, no tongue brace, Waverly tuners. Very good condition. A few dings, some (not much) fret wear, and some wear and tear from an over aggressive peg wider at the headstock/tuning machines. Tonally? Sounds like a pre-war Martin. It just does. Worthy of the finest player, and ready to win Winfield, might land you in the Hall of Fame. Who knows? SOLD

One of a kind, to be sure. And, oh yea, it's finished in VARNISH. The guitar is consigned here as the owner awaits delivery of his next Ken Miller guitar. The sound is balanced. The guitar can work for flatpicking and figerstyle. The guitar is being shipped to Japan. SOLD. SOLD
Mossman 1973
Great Plains
Brazilian
Just arrived (USED) (1973) Always a pleasure to get one of these rare and special guitars. A "pre-fire" (the Mossman factory had a devastating fire in 1975 which destoyed the company's considerable stash of Brazilian rosewood) Great Plains model. 1 and 11/16" nut, low profile neck, 4/32" action at 12th fret, medium tall saddle, ivoroid binding, herringbone purfling, recent fret replacement (new frets have little to no wear) and GREAT bright, strong, Mossman sound. Very good condition overall. Many dings, typical belt buckle rash, capo scars on the neck. So what. They guy (or gal) who wants this guitar will not be a living room "ding-counter", she'll be a contest level picker whose shoes are still muddy from Winfield (where, by the way, Mossmans were made). It can be said, so we will, that Stu Mossman was 20 years ahead of his time, with some early innovations: bolt on neck, low profile necks, mortoise and tenon neck joints, and an attention to quality that was not prevelant in other American guitar factories in the early 70's - which many regard as the "DARK YEARS" for certain American brands. Mossman to the rescue. These guitars are keepers and are a flatpicker's dream come true. A good solid example in a totally beat (original) case. GREAT Bluegrass guitar at a great low price. (New Lower Price) $4,900
Santa Cruz H13
Brazilian
Just arrived (USED) Santa Cruz makes a few models that really do stand out, and chief among them we believe is the H13, their deep OO with 13 fret neck joint reminiscent of the uber-cool Nick Lucas guitars. This one is a mighty special example with very high grade Brazilian rosewood, fine European spruce, Brazilian rosewood fretboard and pyramind bridge and slotted headstock, veneered with more Brazilian. It has the highly desirable 1 and 3/4" nut width, a low-ish profile neck, 3/32" action at 12th fret, 25.4" scale, multi-color herringbone purfling, and cocobolo body binding. What else could one ask for? One of the many nice things about the H13 is its versatility. This is one of those do-it-all guitars. Now, will it keep up with a Tony Rice model for flatpicking? No. Is it as clearly a fingerstyle guitar as the finest OO? Debatable. But does it do everything extremely well? And is it comfortable to boot? Absolutely. This guitar is in excellent condition overall. Words are inadequate. It is worth a road-trip to experience it, but here we offer the next best thing: a YouTube video of Raymond Morin (Pairdown, Work and Worry) playing this guitar. ON CONSIGNMENT. No exports. Brazilian rosewood guitars can be sold within the continental USA only. $7,950
Santa Cruz H14
Mahogany Top
Just arrived (USED) A very nice sounding (used, circa 1998) Santa Cruz model H, one of our favorite SC models here. This is a 14-fret all mahogany model H with 1 and 11/16" nut width, C profile neck, slotted headstock, abalone torch inlayed on the headstock, and nickel Waverly tuners. The action is high: 9/64" low E at 12th fret and 3/32" high E. The saddle is low, with 1/32" showing at the high E portion of the saddle. So it's a high action, sweet sounding, string thwacking blues guitar. There is a fair amout of relief in the neck, about .013" at the 7th fret, so we could probably lower the action *slightly* with a truss rod adjustment if that would suit you. But we want to be clear: the guitar has higher action than you might prefer. It sure is pretty though, and it sure sounds good. It is a very pleasant blues standard scale (25.5") gutiar that is also perfect for open tunings or bottleneck. The condition is VG++ based on the high action. Cosmetically, the guitar has minimal fret wear and is very clean except for some very slight finish bubbling around the bridge (fairly common on these guitars) Includes original case. SCGC model H Serial # 487. It is here on CONSIGNMENT (Sorry, No Trades) $2,950
Santa Cruz FS
Rosewood with Cedar Top
Just arrived (USED) Rosewood and Cedar model FS, 1 and 13/16" nut width. A medium scale (25.375") fingerstyle guitar with style. Indian Rosewood with Cedar top, Brazilian rosewood back stripe and body binding, cutaway, FS style narrow peghead, high end Gotoh 510 tuners. This guitar has had some stage use, and has some scars to show for it - mostly on the (soft cedar) top. Nothing too serious, just cosmetic, and the honest play wear gives the guitar some visual character. Price includes original SCGC case. $2,950
Shanti SF Just arrived (USED) (EXC. +) Another fine used high end guitar, this one a Shanti SF (#26 circa 1999) from the shop of Michael Hornick in Missoula, MT. The SF is a deep body SJ/185 style guitar (16" lower bout, 4 5/8" deep) guitar with massive presence. The guitar has master grade woods (East Indian Rosewood back and sides and a wide grain German spruce top) and wonderful additional decorative features like Brazilian rosewood on the peghead overlay and in the rosette as well as Paua shell and fancy heel cap and backstrip. It has the 1 and 11/16" nut width and a 2 and 3/16" saddle spacing with fossil ivory bridge pins. The guitar had a pickup which has been removed, but the end pin jack remains. It has a second saddle in the case for the purchaser wants to adjust the action, which is currently set at 7/64". The current price on this model directly from Shanti would be $14,500 with a two year wait. It has a custom Calton flite case with it. It was rightly priced at $8,750 with the Calton. It is quite a guitar. Note: The guitar is ON CONSIGNMENT with a New LOWER price - SOLD
Stelling RAD-125 Just Arrived (USED) (EXC. condition -) More Great Stuff! Pardon us if we gush a little about this guitar. First, we love all things Stelling. We love his banjos. We love his mandolins. And we love his guitars. As a reader of these pages, you probably know that the Stelling guitars were actually built by Jeff Huss (now of the Huss and Dalton Guitar Co.) In Bluegrass circles, the Stelling name and these guitars are held in the highest regard. Approximately 100 of these guitars were built. Stelling offered two models and this is the fancier of the two models with full abalone top border and a very ornate peghead design. The guitar has very nice East Indian rosewood back and sides and and tight grain Sitka spruce top with a dramatic Tor-Tis pickguard. Jeff Huss has added a lot of technical innovations to his Huss & Dalton guitars. This one is very traditional and just sounds like an old Martin. Great bluegrass ka-changg and thump. Seriously, if your thing is Bluegrass, this is a WONDERFUL sounding bluegrass rhythm guitar. Orignial (tweed) case, 1 and 3/4" nut width, 2 and 5/16" saddle spacing, compensated saddle, gold Schaller tuners with ebony knobs, a few honest scratches and dings (nothing serious) - a guitar for a serious player and collector of classic things bluegrass. We think this guitar is a piece of bluegass history. A VERY VERY fine Bluegrass guitar. $3,250

Tippin Crescendo
MadRose
(SOLD) (USED) (EXC. condition -) OK! As handcrafted guitars go, Bill Tippin of Marblehead, MASS builds some of the finest. The Crescendo is his most popular model, for good reason. This is the guitar that you can hear Corey Congelio playing HERE The guitar is built with Madagascar Rosewood and really special wide grain Adirondack spruce, has a 1 and 3/4" nut width, 2 and 3/8" (wide) saddle spacing, Brazilian bridge (ebony fretboard) and wood binding, Gold Waverly tuners. The Archives. We've moved a selection of "sold" guitars HERE to its own page to lessen the clutter in the other sections. We've created this section to show a little bit of what's been coming and going. It is a small sample but it gives you a good idea of what we're all about here as well at what we're looking for in the way of trades and consignments. Enjoy!
